The Outreach component of the IEC plan is key to ensuring a diverse workforce.

City of San Diego Recruitment Consortium—Becoming involved with the City Recruitment Consortium has provided an excellent forum to discuss specific ways to increase the diversity of engineers. IEC is proud to be a member and excited about being part of the newly formed committee for college recruitment.

MATHCOUNTS introduces students to math-related careers through contacts with engineers and other professionals who serve as volunteers, which increases the chances for these students to select careers in engineering or science. Founding members of IEC volunteer to tutor middle school students in math and science related materials. IEC has targeted areas within communities that have a large majority of underrepresented groups.

Shadow Day for MESA Engineering Program (MEP) Students—Theresa Garcia of SDSU MEP coordinates an annual Shadow Day for the MEP students. IEC actively participates in this program which provides a great opportunity for the students to explore different facets of engineering. In 2004, IEC welcomed several MEP students to our office to introduce them to different disciplines of civil engineering and provide insight into the daily engineering atmosphere.

Interview/Resume Rehearsals for SDSU/UCSD Students—As part of our involvement with YMF, IEC engineers are an integral part of assisting students with resume and interview strategies to help them prepare for earning their first jobs. The event includes both open discussion advice for success and in-depth review in small groups.

Mentor for SDSU ASCE (through ASCE Younger Member Forum)—The SDSU ASCE Chapter is a group of students who are dedicated to professional development and community service. Through the parent ASCE Section, the SDSU chapter is provided with two Mentors, one of which is an IEC employee. The duties of a Mentor include assistance with career fairs, conferences, fund raising, and general advice to help strengthen the chapter.

Sponsor of the SDSU Civil Engineering Career Fair—IEC participates in this annual opportunity to directly benefit both students looking for jobs and the employers looking for entry-level engineers and interns.

Annual “Engineering Day at the Mall” Outreach—IEC engineers volunteer through the ASCE YMF Program. Elementary schools are invited to attend this event held at various shopping malls. There are specific hands-on projects set up for the children to learn basic engineering principals. It is also an opportunity for engineering firms to set up displays to share local engineering projects. IEC engineers work directly with the children to influence underrepresented groups to consider engineering careers.

Women in Engineering: Building a Future—In 2003, the San Diego Aerospace Museum hosted their inaugural outreach event, “Women in Engineering: Building a Future” which targets introducing engineering to girls ages 11-17. IEC actively recruited women throughout the county to participate in this unique opportunity. Amy Czajkowski, one of the IEC Founders, was the keynote speaker for the event. IEC also sponsored a booth to focus on water and wastewater engineering.
